WVAC is always in search of new, willing, competent volunteers to supplement its membership. We need people who will make a major commitment both for training and on-going volunteer work. EMTs must complete a 120 hour course and pass state written and practical examinations. Our drivers must complete a 40 hour Medical Response Technician (MRT) course. There is also on-the job training for driving an emergency vehicle.
Volunteers are expected to be on call not less than twenty four (24) hours per month, and in addition shall respond to calls, as appropriate on a “neighborhood response” basis”. There are two required evening training and business meetings per month. Members must be strong enough to lift one end of a sixty pound stretcher with a heavy patient. People with bad backs should not apply but we do have members who could be described as petite. Members are required to maintain their certification as prescribed by the State of Connecticut.
Members come from a variety of backgrounds including people who work in town, retirees, and high school students. We even have some couples who are both members and who both work. Reasons for becoming a member vary. Some members say they join because they want to get involved in the community and learn new skills. But perhaps the major benefit of being a member is helping people who are having major problems and making a real difference. Saving lives is a fringe benefit.
